Abertay University is a relatively young institution with a long and proud history. Founded in 1994, the public university was born out of the 1888 Dundee Institute of Technology which was recognised by the Scottish Education Department in 1902. 

Due to its longstanding connection to learning, Abertay was granted university status in 1994, making it the University of Abertay Dundee until changing its name to Abertay University in 2014.
