HNC Courses - Study Bridge Ltd

Students will develop key business skills, be introduced to management and human resource management issues as well as learning how to manage an organisation’s financial resources. Later in the course you will study marketing and business planning, learn about the organisational environment and carry out a work-based project. On successful completion of all the units, a learner will understand how self-managed learning can enhance lifelong development.

BTEC Level 4 HNC in Business provides a specialist work related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the business sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units.

This course also provides a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into higher education. It consists of 120 credits.

Learners who achieve their BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate can progress first to a BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma which offers a great degree of specialisation and then potentially to degree level.

1st Semester Business Environment*
  • Understand the organisational purposes of businesses
  • Understand the nature of the national environment in which businesses operate
  • Understand the behaviour of organisations in their market environment
  • Be able to assess the significance of the global factors that shape national business activities.
The Internet and E-Business*
  • Understand the scope of e-business
  • Understand how the internet works
  • Be able to use different e-business models
  • Be able to use good website design.
 
2nd Semester Managing Financial Resources and Decisions
  • Understand the sources of finance available to a business
  • Understand the implications of finance as a resource within a business
  • Be able to make financial decisions based on financial information
  • Be able to evaluate the financial performance of a business.
Organisations and Behaviour
  • Understand the relationship between organisational structure and culture
  • Understand different approaches to management and leadership
  • Understand ways of using motivational theories in organisations
  • Understand mechanisms for developing effective teamwork in organisations.
Marketing Principles*
  • Understand the concept and process of marketing
  • Be able to use the concepts of segmentation, targeting and positioning
  • Understand the individual elements of the extended marketing mix


Be able to use the marketing mix in different contexts.

 
3rd Semester Aspects of Contract and Negligence for Business *
  • Understand the essential elements of a valid contract in a business context
  • Be able to apply the elements of a contract in business situations
  • Understand principles of liability in negligence in business activities
  • Be able to apply the principles of liability in negligence in business situations.
Human Resource Management
  • Understand the difference between personnel management and human resource management
  • Understand how to recruit employees
  • Understand how to reward employees in order to motivate and retain them
  • Know the mechanisms for the cessation of employment.
Advertising and Promotion in Business*
  • Understand the scope of marketing communications
  • Understand the role and importance of advertising
  • Understand below-the-line techniques and how they are used
  • Be able to plan integrated promotional strategies.

There are no particular entry requirements for this qualification. Candidates who enter with at least two of the following are likely to benefit more readily from a Business programme:

  • a BTEC National, Advanced GNVQ or AVCE in Business or in a related subject (e.g. Tourism, Hospitality and Catering)
  • at least one GCE A Level pass in a relevant subject with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE
  • an Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved Further Education institution
  • appropriate work experience.

Student Loans & Student Grants

A loan to cover your tuition fees and a maintenance loan towards your expenses. The loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of term. You have to pay the loan back.

The student grant is paid into your bank account at the start of term. Additional money (up to £3,250) for qualifying full-time students only, which you will not have to pay back.
